This historical print is a later re-engraving of the famous illustration of the "Black Orang-Utan" which was actually a chimpanzee, originally published in the seminal anatomical work, Orang-Outang, sive Homo Sylvestris. The figure is shown standing upright, often referred to as the "Pygmie," and is depicted here holding a staff and a piece of fruit, an anthropomorphic representation typical of early comparative anatomy. The print is based on the groundbreaking scientific study which detailed the internal anatomy of the ape and compared its structure with that of humans and other primates.

Edward Tyson was an English physician and comparative anatomist, often regarded as the father of comparative anatomy. His magnum opus, Orang-Outang, sive Homo Sylvestris (1699), presented the first scientific and anatomical description of a great ape—a chimpanzee—demonstrating its closer relationship to humans than to monkeys. This work significantly influenced subsequent scientific thought on man's place in nature, providing a foundation for evolutionary theory many decades later.
