133 Marcus Elieser Bloch (1723–1799) – The Coral-lip Sea Bream – Engraving, Hand-coloured (c. 1785)

This hand-coloured engraving is a detailed illustration of a coral-lip sea bream (Sclaepa crenidens). The main figure of the fish is shown in side profile with its yellowish body, brownish back, and prominent reddish fins. The plate also includes a separate diagram of a fish egg. This print is from Marcus Elieser Bloch's monumental work, "Allgemeine Naturgeschichte der Fische," a landmark in the history of ichthyology.
Marcus Elieser Bloch was a German physician and naturalist who is considered one of the founders of modern ichthyology. His "Allgemeine Naturgeschichte der Fische" was an ambitious and comprehensive work that documented over 200 species of fish. The book is highly regarded for its meticulously detailed and beautifully hand-coloured plates, drawn by artists like J. L. F. Delong and engraved by F. K. Güth.
