81 Anders Fredrik Skjöldebrand (1757–1834) – Alten Gaard – Aquatint on wove paper – 1801

This atmospheric aquatint depicts Alten Gaard (present-day Alta), a trading and missionary settlement on the Altafjord in northern Norway. The foreground features cultivated fields and clustered wooden buildings, including the prominent main house of the estate, while the midground opens into a vast fjord landscape flanked by steep forested slopes and distant mountain ridges.
Anders Fredrik Skjöldebrand (1757–1834) was a Swedish count, statesman, and artist. Known for his expedition to northern Scandinavia in the late 18th century, he documented landscapes and cultural scenes through engravings and aquatints. His work Voyage pittoresque au Cap Nord remains a landmark in early Nordic travel illustration and Romantic-era topographical printmaking.
