This ethnographic print illustrates four female figures from China and Tartary (Central Asia), showcasing distinct social classes and roles, including a Lady, a Nun, a Peasant, and a Servant. The figures are depicted standing in an outdoor, semi-tropical setting with exotic plants and trees. The work is a detailed illustration of regional costume and appearance, published in the comprehensive 18th-century French compendium, the Histoire Générale des Voyages, compiled and edited  by Abbé Prévost. The visual data was originally sourced from the writings of the Jesuit historian Father Jean-Baptiste Du Halde.

Antoine-François Prévost d'Exiles, known as the Abbé Prévost, was a prominent French author, novelist, and historian of the 18th century, famous for his novel Manon Lescaut. He spent years compiling and editing the encyclopedic Histoire Générale des Voyages (General History of Voyages). This monumental work, which synthesized travel accounts from around the world, was a major publishing success of the Enlightenment, and Prévost's editorial effort was instrumental in shaping European perceptions of distant cultures and geographies.
