135 Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon (1707–1788) – Set of Two: Plates of Triggerfish, Cod, Catfish, and Garfish Species – Engraving (Circa 1800)

This set of two detailed scientific prints illustrates six different species of marine and freshwater fish, each identified by French and Latin nomenclature. These two engravings originate from the Histoire naturelle des poissons (Natural History of Fish), which forms part of the continuation of Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon’s encyclopedic Histoire Naturelle. The fish volumes were compiled and overseen by Buffon's collaborator, Bernard Germain de Lacépède.
Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon, was a celebrated French naturalist, mathematician, and cosmologist of the Enlightenment. As the superintendent of the Jardin du Roi (King’s Garden), he undertook the monumental Histoire Naturelle, générale et particulière, an ambitious encyclopedia of the natural world. Although the volumes on fish were published posthumously, the entire 44-volume collection is credited to Buffon, cementing his status as a key figure in modern natural history and classification.
