This ethnographic figure study, titled Négresse du Royaume d'Aardra, depicts a woman in the traditional dress of the Kingdom of Ardra (Allada), located in modern Benin, Africa. The figure is shown wearing brightly colored, patterned fabrics as a skirt and sash, adorned with numerous multi-colored bead necklaces and bracelets. The composition portrays the subject in a dynamic pose within a simple landscape setting. This print originates from Encyclopédie des voyages (Encyclopedia of Voyages), a multi-volume French compendium intended to visually document the distinctive dress, customs, and appearance of peoples from across the globe in the late 18th century.

Jacques Grasset de Saint-Sauveur was a French writer, diplomat, and ethnographic compiler of the Enlightenment period. He is best known for devising and publishing the Encyclopédie des voyages, a monumental work that featured hundreds of plates illustrating the world’s inhabitants. Through this project, Grasset directed the production of thousands of visual records, aiming to create a systematic and comprehensive visual record of human cultures.
