This detailed botanical illustration documents multiple related species of Sage and Clary (Horminum and Salvia). The print showcases at least two distinct color variations: a pale blue-flowered variety and a pink-flowered variety. The composition carefully arranges the plants to display the entire form, including the serrated leaves and the tiered structure of the flower spikes. This print originates from Phytanthoza Iconographia, a monumental four-volume work that sought to document thousands of known botanical species, both indigenous and exotic, in the mid-18th century.

Johann Wilhelm Weinmann was an influential German pharmacist, apothecary, and botanist. He commissioned Phytanthoza Iconographia, his enduring masterpiece, overseeing the production of over a thousand plates. This work is celebrated in botanical art history for being the first major publication to employ the pioneering technique of color-printed mezzotint, often after original drawings by eminent artists like Georg Dionysius Ehret, lending the finished prints their exceptional depth and tonal quality.
