This hand-coloured woodblock engraving, titled "Troy Town", depicts a fanciful but detailed medieval architectural scene representing the legendary rebuilding of the ancient city of Troy. The illustration focuses on a complex, multi-story structure and gate decorated with historical motifs, while workmen utilize a large wooden crane and winch on the upper levels. The street scene below is bustling with figures in 15th-century costume, including a merchant's stall and an apothecary. The entire composition is a highly detailed, scholarly reconstruction of medieval life and architecture, published as a plate in Henry Shaw’s comprehensive antiquarian work, Dresses and Decorations of the Middle Ages from the 7th to the 17th Centuries.

Henry Shaw was an English architectural draughtsman, engraver, and antiquary of the 19th century. He was born in London and elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries in 1833. Shaw was highly skilled in various printmaking techniques, including engraving, etching, and wood engraving, which he used primarily to illustrate his own scholarly works on medieval and Renaissance decorative arts, architecture, and costume. His most famous publications include Details of Gothic Architecture and the seminal two-volume Dresses and Decorations of the Middle Ages, establishing him as a prominent figure in 19th-century antiquarian publishing.
