120 François Nicolas Martinet (c. 1725–1804) – Guiana Thrush (Merle, de la Guiane) – Hand-coloured Engraving (Circa 1760)
This vibrant, hand-coloured engraving illustrates an exotic bird identified by the French title "Merle, de la Guiane" (Thrush of Guiana). The bird is depicted perched on a stubby branch, showcasing its striking, richly colored plumage, which includes brown and black upperparts, a bright yellow and blue speckled breast, and a deep blue tail. The illustration is set within a yellow border and is identified as originating from the region of Guiana (South America). This plate is an ornithological study from an 18th-century French natural history publication, often related to the works of Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon, or Mathurin Jacques Brisson.
François Nicolas Martinet was a prolific French engineer, draftsman, and engraver, specializing in ornithological subjects. His detailed and accurate bird illustrations are considered some of the finest in 18th-century natural history and established the standard for bird portraiture in the age of Enlightenment.
