This original 16th-century woodcut depicts a stylized duck with a broad, flat beak, accompanied by Latin text from De Anatiferis, part of Conrad Gessner’s seminal zoological work Historiae Animalium. Gessner, often referred to as the father of modern zoology, was a Swiss naturalist and physician whose encyclopedic publications combined ancient knowledge with his own observations and were among the most influential scientific works of the Renaissance.

This particular illustration belongs to Book III, which focuses on birds, and demonstrates Gessner’s method of detailed description supported by careful visual representation. His integration of image and taxonomy laid the foundation for future zoological illustration and classification systems.
