12784 Johann Wilhelm Weinmann (1683-1741) – View of Canna Lily Species – Hand-coloured etching (1737)
"Canna Indica flore rubro, Canna Indica latifolia" This plate illustrates two varieties of the Indian shot or Canna lily, featuring large, broad green leaves and vibrant red and yellow streaked blossoms on tall stalks. The technical nature is a hand-coloured etching. It was published in the Phytanthoza Iconographia, a monumental four-volume botanical work printed in Regensburg. This publication is highly significant as it was one of the first botanical books to utilize color-printed mezzotint and etching, providing a comprehensive visual record of thousands of plants from around the world.
Johann Wilhelm Weinmann was a German apothecary and botanist who served as the director of the court pharmacy in Regensburg. He spent much of his life collecting plant specimens and coordinating a massive project to document them in a scientifically accurate atlas. He collaborated with famous artists and engravers, including Georg Dionysius Ehret and the Haid family, to produce over one thousand plates. His work remained a standard reference for botanical illustration for decades and is celebrated for its aesthetic beauty and early technical innovation in color printing.
