This topographical engraving presents two detailed architectural views of city gates, separated by a central vertical line. The left panel illustrates the Dam Poort, a substantial stone gatehouse featuring a central arched portal, a prominent clock tower with a spire, and a wooden drawbridge extending over a moat. The right panel depicts the Vlissingsche Poort, characterized by a taller, more slender tower and a symmetrical facade adorned with a central heraldic relief. Both scenes show the gates from a water-level perspective, with the wooden piles of the bridges reflected in the calm surface of the surrounding moats. Decorative banners containing the names of the gates are positioned in the upper corners of each view, identifying these structures as primary defensive and ceremonial entrances to a major Dutch city.

Daniel Stoopendaal was a prominent Dutch engraver and draughtsman active in Amsterdam and Utrecht during the late 17th and early 18th centuries. He is best known for his extensive series of topographical views, which documented the estates along the river Vecht and the monumental architecture of major Dutch cities. His engravings are characterized by their clarity, technical precision, and the ability to capture the scale and elegance of Renaissance and Baroque design. Stoopendaal's work was widely published in contemporary atlases and city descriptions, contributing to the international reputation of the Netherlands as a center for sophisticated urban planning and architectural achievement.
