12596 Mattheus Smallegange (1624–1710) – Four Views of Amsterdam - Engraving (17th Century)

This engraving presents a composite view of Amsterdam (Netherlands), divided into four distinct scenes of city life and topography. The top left panel, titled Daar Schoesteren Meucke (The Shoemakers' Booth), depicts the interior of a large public hall, possibly a market or a church, filled with various figures. The upper right and lower left panels focus on the area of the Exchange (Wisselbaan), showing street views dense with commercial activity, including ships docked in the canals. The lower right panel, Spaense Gevech (The Spanish Fight), illustrates an outdoor crowd gathered for what appears to be a public incident or spectacle. The print offers a detailed glimpse into the urban environment, trade, and daily routines of the city during the Dutch Golden Age.
Mattheus Smallegange was a Dutch historian, lawyer, and genealogist who was active in Goes and Middelburg, with a period of residence in Amsterdam. He is best known for compiling the extensively illustrated Nieuwe Cronyk van Zeeland, a major historical and topographical description of the Zeeland province, published in 1700. He spent decades researching and collecting material for his historical projects.
