12551 Victor Levasseur (1800–1870) – Map of Asia – Asian continent – Hand-coloured engraving (1852)

"Asie" This work provides a detailed geographical and decorative study of the Asian continent, featuring hand-coloured regional delineations and an elaborate allegorical border. The engraving was published in Paris as part of the Atlas National Illustré des 86 Départements et des Possessions de la France, a significant mid-19th-century cartographic project. The central map is surrounded by intricate vignettes depicting Asian wildlife, local inhabitants, and major historical figures such as Alexander the Great and Genghis Khan. To the left and right of the map, decorative scrolls provide comprehensive statistical data regarding the population, major cities, and trade commodities of the various Asian empires and colonies. This plate reflects the mid-19th-century French interest in ethnographic documentation and the exoticism of distant territories, blending rigorous cartography with romanticized artistic illustration.
Victor Levasseur was a prominent French engineer and cartographer who achieved widespread fame for his highly decorative and informative atlases. He served as a member of the Geographical Society of Paris and was known for his ability to combine geographical data with rich, pedagogical illustrations that appealed to a broad public. His most famous work, the Atlas National Illustré, remains a primary example of the "Levasseur style," characterized by the use of elaborate pictorial borders to provide social, economic, and historical context. His maps played a crucial role in popularizing geographical knowledge during the reign of Napoleon III and are noted for their high technical and artistic quality.
