12544 Mattheus Smallegange (1624–1704) – Views of Nieuw Cortgene and Out Cortgene – Netherlands – Engraving (1696)

"Nieuw Cortgene. Out Cortgene" This work provides a dual topographical study of the Zeeland town of Kortgene, presenting a contemporary bird's eye view of the newly rebuilt settlement alongside a historical reconstruction of the original town before its destruction. The engraving was published in Middelburg as part of the Nieuwe Cronyk van Zeeland. This plate is distinguished by its detailed rendering of maritime activity, traditional Dutch church architecture, and the transition from medieval fortifications to open post-flood planning.
Mattheus Smallegange was a Dutch historian, genealogist, and lawyer who dedicated decades to compiling a comprehensive record of the province of Zeeland. His monumental historical survey, published at the end of the 17th century, is considered a primary source for the region's history, documenting noble families, manor houses, and urban geography. He worked closely with engravers to ensure that the visual documentation of the Zeeland landscape was accurate and detailed. His work remains a vital reference for the topographical and social history of the Dutch Republic.
