12539 Sebastian Münster (1488–1552) – Study of an Elk from Cosmographia – Woodcut (1550)

"Vondem Teutschen Landt. Elend" This work provides a natural history study of an elk, referred to as an Elent, within the section of the treatise dedicated to the German lands. The woodcut was published in Basel as part of Cosmographia, the earliest German-language description of the world. This plate is distinguished by its characteristic Renaissance woodcut style, depicting the animal in profile with its distinctive palmate antlers and a descriptive German text block in Fraktur script that discusses its habitat and physical traits.
Sebastian Münster was a significant German cartographer, cosmographer, and Christian Hebraist whose monumental publication aimed to provide a comprehensive encyclopedic survey of geography, history, ethnography, and zoology. A professor at the University of Basel, he was one of the most influential scholars of the Reformation era. His work revolutionized the documentation of the known world through the integration of text and woodcut illustrations.
