12501 Cornelis de Bruyn (1652–1726) – Study of a Musician and an Imperial Hunt – Etching (1711)
"Beide Veld." The upper register depicts a long-haired ox or muskox in a mountainous landscape, standing before a settlement of wooden structures. The lower register illustrates an expansive imperial hunting scene where numerous figures on horseback pursue a herd of deer across an open plain. This etching was published in Amsterdam as part of the travel account Reizen over Moskovie, door Persie en Indie, printed by Willem and David Goeree. The work records the observations made during the artist's travels through the Russian Empire and Persia, documenting the fauna and courtly activities of the regions.
Cornelis de Bruyn was a Dutch artist and traveler who gained renown for his highly accurate visual records of the Near East and Russia. He was trained as a painter and used his skills to provide western audiences with detailed depictions of foreign architecture, customs, and natural history. His expeditions were characterized by a commitment to drawing from life, often correcting the inaccuracies of previous explorers.
