"Carte d'Espagne et de Portugal." This hand-coloured etching provides a detailed geographical representation of the Iberian Peninsula during the early nineteenth century. The map delineates the historical provinces and kingdoms of Spain and Portugal, using subtle hand-applied colour washes to distinguish regional boundaries. It captures the complex topography of the region, including the major mountain ranges like the Pyrenees and the Sierra Nevada, along with the extensive river systems of the Ebro, Tagus, and Guadalquivir. The coastal areas are meticulously detailed, showing major ports and maritime features from the Bay of Biscay to the Mediterranean Sea. This map was published in Paris by Jean-Baptiste Delaval in 1818, based on the authoritative geographical research conducted by Mentelle.

Edme Mentelle was a prominent French geographer and historian who held the position of professor at the Ecole Normale and was a member of the Institut de France. He became one of the most prolific cartographers of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, often collaborating with Pierre-Gilles Chanlaire on comprehensive national atlases. Mentelle was noted for his ability to integrate historical context with precise geographical data, making his maps essential for both education and state administration. His work spanned the transition from the Ancien Regime through the Napoleonic era to the Bourbon Restoration, providing a consistent record of the changing borders and internal structures of European nations.
