"Nymphaea. Nelumbium." This eighteenth-century engraving presents a comparative botanical study of two prominent aquatic genera, the water lily and the lotus. The upper register focuses on the nymphaea, showing various blossom stages and detailed cross-sections of the seed-bearing fruit. The lower register illustrates the nelumbium, specifically highlighting the characteristic peltate leaf and the distinctive conical seed pod with its individual nutlets. Numerous analytical figures at the bottom of each section provide microscopic details of the seeds and embryonic structures to satisfy the taxonomic requirements of the era. This work was published in Paris as part of the botanical section of the Encyclopedie Methodique, published by Charles-Joseph Panckoucke.

Jacques-Christophe de Seve was a prominent French illustrator who achieved great acclaim for his contributions to natural history publications. He is most famous for his extensive work on Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon’s monumental Histoire Naturelle, for which he designed hundreds of plates depicting animals and plants. De Seve’s style is noted for its precision and clarity, essential qualities for the scientific documentation of the Enlightenment. His ability to render complex organic forms into clear, informative engravings made him one of the most sought-after draughtsmen for encyclopedic and scientific projects of the late eighteenth century.
