"Papaver. Pavot." This eighteenth-century engraving provides a scientific illustration of the poppy plant, focusing on its reproductive anatomy. The composition features several detailed figures including a full flowering stem with pinnatifid leaves, individual blossoms in various stages of opening, and various seed capsules or pods showing the characteristic stigmatic disc. These morphological details illustrate the Linnaean classification of Polyandrie Monogynie, as noted at the top of the plate. This work was published in Paris as part of the botanical section of the Encyclopédie Méthodique, a massive expansion of the original Diderot and d’Alembert encyclopedia published by Charles-Joseph Panckoucke.

Jacques-Louis-Florentin Fossier was a French draughtsman and botanical artist who contributed significantly to the scientific publications of the late eighteenth century. He was a regular collaborator on major natural history projects, providing precise drawings that were then converted into engravings for widespread distribution. His work is characterized by the technical clarity required for Enlightenment-era scientific taxonomy, balancing artistic grace with rigorous empirical observation. Fossier’s illustrations were instrumental in documenting the flora for the encyclopedic movements that sought to categorize all human knowledge during the French Revolution and the Napoleonic era.
