12476 Pietro Andrea Mattioli (1501–1577) – Botanical Study of Water Plantain and Water Parsnip (Berle) – Woodcut (1572)

"Plantain Aqvatiq. Berle Vraye. Berle Commvne." This woodcut presents three distinct aquatic botanical specimens. The top illustration depicts water plantain with its broad leaves and delicate flowering panicle. The bottom left features the true water parsnip, while the bottom right shows the common water parsnip, both displaying pinnate leaf structures characteristic of wetland flora. The French text analyzes the plants' mixed temperaments of heat and cold, detailing their use in treating dysentery and external burns. The author also discusses the medicinal benefits of the seeds and roots for liver and kidney ailments. This page is a leaf from the French edition of the commentaries on the medicinal works of Dioscorides, published by Gabriel Cotier in Lyon in 1572.
Pietro Andrea Mattioli was an Italian physician and naturalist who became a central figure in Renaissance botany. He is primarily known for his extensive commentaries on the work of the ancient Greek physician Dioscorides. Mattioli expanded upon classical knowledge by identifying and describing numerous European plant species previously unknown to the scientific community. His publications were highly influential and served as the standard reference for medical and botanical studies across Europe for nearly two centuries.
