12456 Athanasius Kircher (1602–1680) – Geological Study of River Erosion and Delta Formation – Engraving (1665)

"Opificium Globi Terreni". This scientific engraving illustrates the principles of physical geography and the formative power of water on the Earth's surface. The page features two distinct diagrams: the upper image shows the meandering course of a river, while the larger lower engraving depicts a river system originating from mountain ranges and flowing into a coastal delta. The delta is shown branching into the sea, labeled with various letters to explain the deposition of silt and the creation of new landmasses. The Latin text discusses the constant metamorphosis of the terrestrial globe through the action of currents and floods, citing examples from major river systems like the Rhine, Danube, and Nile. This work was published in Amsterdam as part of the treatise Mundus Subterraneus.
Athanasius Kircher was a German Jesuit scholar and one of the most versatile scientific minds of the Baroque era. Often referred to as a master of a hundred arts, he published extensive works on subjects ranging from oriental studies and medicine to geology and music theory. His Mundus Subterraneus was a pioneering effort in the field of geophysics, combining empirical observation with theological and philosophical speculation. Kircher’s work was instrumental in disseminating the idea of an interconnected subterranean world, influenced by his personal observations of volcanic activity and sea currents.
