12455 Athanasius Kircher (1602–1680) – Map of the Arctic and Antarctic Poles – World – Engraving (1665)

"Poli Arctici Constitutio" and "Poli Antarctici Constitutio". This scientific engraving presents a theoretical model of the Earth's polar regions as envisioned by a mid-seventeenth-century polymath. The upper diagram illustrates the Arctic Pole with a massive central whirlpool or vortex, which Kircher hypothesized was a point of entry for ocean waters into a subterranean network of channels. Surrounding the vortex are the stylized coastlines of northern territories, including Greenland and parts of Tartary. The lower diagram depicts the Antarctic Pole, represented as an unexplored and largely solid landmass or ice field with radial striations. This work was published in Amsterdam as part of the influential treatise Mundus Subterraneus, which sought to explain the geological and hydrological systems of the planet.
Athanasius Kircher was a German Jesuit scholar and one of the most versatile scientific minds of the Baroque era. Often referred to as a master of a hundred arts, he published extensive works on subjects ranging from oriental studies and medicine to geology and music theory. His Mundus Subterraneus was a pioneering effort in the field of geophysics, combining empirical observation with theological and philosophical speculation. Kircher’s work was instrumental in disseminating the idea of an interconnected subterranean world, influenced by his personal observations of volcanic activity and sea currents.
