12447 Rigobert Bonne (1727–1794) – Map of the British Isles – United Kingdom – Engraving (1780)
"Isles-Britanniques, Contenant les Royaumes d'Angleterre, d'Ecosse et d'Irlande". This geographical map delineates the kingdoms of England, Scotland, and Ireland during the late eighteenth century. The engraving illustrates the political boundaries, coastal topography, major river systems, and urban centers across the archipelago. The composition includes several distance scales and coordinates based on the meridians of Paris and Ferro. This work was published in Paris as part of the Atlas de toutes les parties connues du globe terrestre by the publisher Jean-Leonard Pellet in 1780.
Rigobert Bonne was a French cartographer and mathematician who held the prestigious position of Royal Hydrographer at the Depot de la Marine. He was responsible for producing highly accurate maritime charts and terrestrial maps that served both scientific and military purposes. Bonne is recognized for his significant contributions to the encyclopedic projects of the Enlightenment, including his collaboration with Guillaume Raynal. His maps are characterized by a refined aesthetic and a commitment to updated geographical data, influencing European cartography for several decades.
