12445 Mattheus Smallegange (1624–1710) – Panoramic View of Zierikzee from the Sea Side (Zeeland) – Hand-coloured engraving (1696)
"ZIERIK-ZEE aan de Zee Zyde". This impressive panoramic engraving offers a seafaring perspective of Zierikzee, one of the most important historical ports in the province of Zeeland. The composition highlights the city's strategic maritime position, featuring the harbor entrance with sailing vessels and the massive, unfinished Sint-Lievensmonstertoren (Fat Tower) which dominates the skyline. The city’s defensive perimeter is clearly visible, showing the medieval walls, harbor gates, and windmills. Two large decorative cartouches supported by putti float in the sky: the left bearing the lion of the Zeeland provincial arms and the right displaying the municipal arms of Zierikzee. This plate was published in Middelburg as a key illustration for the Nieuwe Cronyk van Zeeland.
Mattheus Smallegange was a Dutch historian, lawyer, and genealogist who dedicated much of his life to documenting the history and topography of the province of Zeeland. His magnum opus, the Nieuwe Cronyk van Zeeland, is considered one of the most important Dutch provincial chronicles ever produced. Smallegange spent decades gathering information, family records, and architectural details to ensure the work's accuracy. He collaborated with skilled engravers to create hundreds of high-quality plates, providing an unparalleled visual record of Zeeland's cities, villages, and noble estates. His work remains a primary source for historians studying the Dutch Republic's
maritime and urban history.
