12434 Franz Xavier Weninger (1805–1888) – Saint Gregory Thaumaturgus – Engraving (18th Century)

"S. Gregorius Thaum.". This devotional work depicts a significant moment from the life of Saint Gregory Thaumaturgus (the Wonderworker). The central oval vignette shows the saint in a library or study, engaging with figures who represent his role as a teacher and bishop, while a celestial radiance containing divine figures appears in the clouds above. Below the image, the German text provides a spiritual exhortation comparing the hedonism of the godless with the Christian discipline of fasting and prayer, citing Saint Augustine. The plate is designated for the feast day of November 17. This engraving serves as a hagiographic illustration for a liturgical calendar or a collection of the lives of the saints.
Franz Xavier Weninger was an Austrian Jesuit priest, missionary, and a highly prolific author of religious literature. After moving to the United States in the mid-19th century, he became a central figure in the spiritual life of German-speaking immigrants, conducting thousands of missions across the country. He authored over forty books, including his most famous work, the "Lives of the Saints" (Die Legende der Heiligen), which integrated historical engravings to provide moral and spiritual guidance. Weninger's contributions were instrumental in the growth of the Catholic press and the preservation of European devotional traditions in North America.
