12433 Franz Xavier Weninger (1805–1888) – The Martyrdom of Saint Godoleva – Engraving (18th Century)

"S. Godoleva M.". This devotional work illustrates the martyrdom of Saint Godoleva, a Flemish saint. The central oval vignette depicts the kneeling saint being strangled by two servants with a cloth, representing her traditional martyrdom by order of her husband. An angel appears in a radiance above, bearing the palm of martyrdom and a crown. Below the image, the German text offers a moral reflection on the trials of the innocent and trust in God, citing Saint Ambrose. The plate is assigned to the feast day of July 6. This engraving serves as a hagiographic illustration for a liturgical calendar or a collection of the lives of the saints.
Franz Xavier Weninger was an Austrian Jesuit priest, missionary, and a highly prolific author of religious literature. After moving to the United States in the mid-19th century, he became a central figure in the spiritual life of German-speaking immigrants, conducting thousands of missions across the country. He authored over forty books, including his most famous work, the "Lives of the Saints" (Die Legende der Heiligen), which integrated historical engravings to provide moral and spiritual guidance. Weninger's contributions were instrumental in the growth of the Catholic press and the preservation of European devotional traditions in North America.
