12423 Girolamo Ruscelli (1500–1566) – Emblem of Carlo Nono – Engraving (1566)

"Carlo Nono". This work features a central oval emblem within a highly decorative Mannerist frame. The central motif depicts two intertwined architectural columns or conduits, crossed in a shape resembling the letter X, with a ribbon weaving through them bearing the words Pietas and Justitia (Piety and Justice). The elaborate surrounding ornamentation includes winged angels at the top flanking a crown, male nude figures supporting fruit garlands on the sides, and sea-horses ridden by small figures at the base. This engraving was published in Venice as part of the influential work Le Imprese Illustri con Esposizioni et Discorsi, which cataloged the personal devices and moral mottos of the Italian nobility.
Girolamo Ruscelli was an Italian humanist, writer, and cartographer who was a central figure in the intellectual circles of mid-sixteenth-century Venice. He is best known for his expanded editions of Ptolemy's Geography and his extensive work on emblems and devices for the Italian nobility. Ruscelli was a founding member of several literary academies and contributed significantly to the standardization of the Italian language and the study of heraldry. His publications on emblems were instrumental in codifying the symbolic language used by the elite to communicate personal values, lineage, and political allegiances during the late Renaissance.
