12421 Girolamo Ruscelli (1500–1566) – Emblem of Bernardo Nani – Engraving (1566)

"Bernardo Nani". This work features a complex heraldic and allegorical emblem contained within a decorative cartouche. The central scene depicts a mirror reflecting the rays of a radiant sun, accompanied by the Latin motto "Ut Valeo" (As I am able). The emblem is surrounded by elaborate Mannerist ornamentation, including putti, garlands of fruit, and a coat of arms at the base. Below the image, a descriptive Italian text explains the philosophical and moral significance of the "Impresa dello Specchio" (Emblem of the Mirror), linking the reflection of light to the virtuous disposition and noble character of Bernardo Nani. This plate was published in Venice as part of the influential work Le Imprese Illustri con Esposizioni et Discorsi.
Girolamo Ruscelli was an Italian humanist, writer, and cartographer who was a central figure in the intellectual circles of mid-sixteenth-century Venice. He is best known for his expanded editions of Ptolemy's Geography and his extensive work on emblems and devices for the Italian nobility. Ruscelli was a founding member of several literary academies and contributed significantly to the standardization of the Italian language and the study of heraldry. His publications on "Imprese" were instrumental in codifying the symbolic language used by the elite to communicate personal values, lineage, and political allegiances during the late Renaissance.
