"Pêches de Mer, Fourée Tournée ou Bas Parc, Bouteux, Chausse ou Drague, grande Traine ou Dreige". This large-format engraving documents several active fishing methods that involve moving or towing nets. The left panel shows fixed coastal traps and a fisherman using a hand-held "bouteux" net. The central panel illustrates a small sailing vessel dragging a specialized dredging net (chausse ou drague) along the seabed. The right panel depicts a larger operation involving multiple boats using a "grande traine" or seine net to encircle schools of fish. These detailed scenes illustrate the early industrialization of maritime labor and the variety of specialized gear developed for different depths and species.

This plate belongs to the "Pêches" (Fishing) section of the Encyclopédie, ou Dictionnaire raisonné des sciences, des arts et des métiers, edited by Denis Diderot and Jean le Rond d'Alembert. This monumental Enlightenment project was groundbreaking for its technical focus, aiming to preserve and share the "secrets" of various trades for the improvement of society. Robert Benard, as the director of the engraving department, ensured that these illustrations were both artistically consistent and scientifically rigorous, providing some of the most accurate visual evidence of pre-modern European fishing practices.

Robert Benard was a French engraver who specialized in technical and scientific illustration during the eighteenth century. He served as the primary engraver for the Académie Royale des Sciences and the director of the engraving department for Diderot's Encyclopédie. His body of work is characterized by a precise and methodical linear style that was ideally suited for documenting complex mechanical trades, natural history specimens, and maritime technologies. Benard is credited with overseeing the production of over two thousand plates that defined the visual language of the French Enlightenment.
