"Horlogerie, Ressorts de Montre". This technical engraving provides a comprehensive visual catalog of the tools and components involved in the manufacture of watch mainsprings. The plate features a variety of specialized instruments, including various types of pliers, vices mounted on workbenches, winding mechanisms, and gauges for measuring tension and diameter. A central figure illustrates a sophisticated rolling mill used for thinning the steel for springs. The upper portion of the plate displays coiled mainsprings in different stages of completion. Each tool and part is rendered with technical precision to demonstrate its mechanical function.

This work was sourced from the Encyclopédie, ou Dictionnaire raisonné des sciences, des arts et des métiers, edited by Denis Diderot and Jean le Rond d'Alembert. Published in Paris, this monumental Enlightenment project aimed to document all available human knowledge, with a specific focus on the mechanical arts and trades. Robert Benard directed the engraving of the copperplates for the Encyclopédie, ensuring a standardized and clear linear style that was essential for the accurate transmission of technical information to craftsmen and scholars alike.

Robert Benard was a French engraver who specialized in technical and scientific illustration during the eighteenth century. He served as the primary engraver for the Académie Royale des Sciences and the director of the engraving department for Diderot's Encyclopédie. His body of work is characterized by a precise and methodical linear style that was ideally suited for documenting complex mechanical trades and natural history specimens. Benard is credited with overseeing the production of over two thousand plates that contributed to the global dissemination of French Enlightenment knowledge.
