The lower panel displays a temporary shore structure covered by a large tarp, with workers busy at tasks related to fish preparation, while small sailboats navigate the coastal waters in the background. This copper engraving provides technical detail on the infrastructure and labor associated with maritime harvesting. It originates from the Encyclopédie méthodique, a massive multi-volume technical and scientific reference work published in Paris during the eighteenth century.
Robert Bénard was a French engraver who played a crucial role in the dissemination of knowledge during the Enlightenment. He is best recognized for his precise and prolific contributions as a principal engraver for the Encyclopédie, edited by Denis Diderot and Jean le Rond d'Alembert.
