"Vase." This engraving presents a detailed study of a monumental classical ewer or pitcher, characterized by its elaborate ornamental features. The body of the vessel is decorated with a wide frieze depicting a mythological scene with four figures in classical attire, including a central male figure holding a trident. Below this frieze, a winged Pegasus is rendered in high relief on the lower part of the body. The handle is exceptionally ornate, formed by two intertwined serpents that terminate in a bearded grotesque mask where the handle meets the rim. The vessel sits on a tiered rectangular pedestal, and the work is framed by a simple linear border. This plate serves as a significant record of the neoclassical interest in the decorative arts and the revival of antique forms during the eighteenth century.

M. Brinclaire was a French engraver active during the eighteenth century, specializing in the documentation of decorative arts and antiquities. His work is primarily known through his collaborations with other artists and designers to produce high-quality plates for architectural and ornamental publications. He excelled in the technical rendering of textures, from the smoothness of polished stone to the intricate details of bronze and silver reliefs. Brinclaire’s engravings played a vital role in disseminating the neoclassical aesthetic across Europe, providing models for craftsmen and inspiration for aristocratic collectors. His legacy remains a valuable resource for the study of eighteenth-century taste and the enduring influence of classical Greek and Roman design on the decorative arts.
