11491 Girolamo Ruscelli (1504–1566) – Emblem of Federico Rovero – Engraving (1566)

"Federico Rovero, Rotario Monsignor di Ceresola." This engraving features the personal device of Federico Rovero, a member of the influential Piedmontese nobility. The central image depicts a large treadwheel with a man on horseback positioned inside, representing the concept of constant motion and the energy required to elevate great weights or achieve significant goals. The scene is enclosed within an elaborate Renaissance strapwork cartouche featuring two winged figures blowing trumpets and a decorative floral motif at the base. This work was published in Venice as part of Le Imprese Illustri, a celebrated sixteenth-century collection of symbolic devices belonging to the European intellectual and political elite. The accompanying text provides a humanist commentary on the mechanical and moral implications of the wheel as a symbol of persistent effort.
