11458 Robert Bénard (1734–1777) – View of Hook and Line Fishing Techniques – Engraving (1778)

"Pêches aux Hameçons, Hains &c." This engraving presents three distinct sections illustrating traditional fishing methods from the eighteenth century. The top panel depicts fishermen on a rocky riverbank utilizing stationary nets and rods in a tranquil wooded setting. The middle panel shows coastal fishing activities with figures casting lines from a rocky shore while sailing vessels navigate the background. The bottom panel provides a technical display of various fishing implements, including different styles of hooks, a hand net, and detailed renderings of the fish being targeted. This plate was published in Paris as part of the Recueil de Planches for the Encyclopédie of Denis Diderot and Jean le Rond d'Alembert. It serves as an essential visual record of the specialized equipment and diverse environments associated with the fishing trade during the Enlightenment.
