11417 Mattheus Smallegange (1624-1710) – View of the Castles of Heinkensand, Heere Heins, Schingen, and Gistellis – Engraving (1696)
"t Slot van Zyn Excl. Odyck tot Heynkensant," "Het Slot van s' Heere Heins kinderen," "t Vervalle Slot van Schingen," and "Het Slot van Gistellis." This print presents four individual topographical views of noble residences in the province of Zeeland. The upper left illustrates the stately manor at Heinkensand with its distinctive domed tower and carriage in the foreground. The upper right shows the estate of the Heere Heins children, characterized by vast, patterned gardens and orchards. The lower left depicts the ruins of the castle at Schingen, while the lower right features the gabled residence of Gistellis surrounded by a semicircular garden and wooden fence. These engravings were published in the Nieuwe Cronyk van Zeeland in Middelburg by Johannes Meertens, documenting the diverse architectural styles and states of preservation of Zeeland's manorial estates during the late seventeenth century.
Mattheus Smallegange was a notable Dutch historian and genealogist who dedicated much of his life to chronicling the history of Zeeland. He is best remembered for his massive publication, the Nieuwe Cronyk van Zeeland, which remains a primary reference for the historical topography of the area. Smallegange collaborated with various skilled engravers to produce high-quality visual documentation of castles, city views, and heraldry. His efforts preserved the likeness of many architectural sites that have since been altered or destroyed, making his work invaluable to researchers of Dutch cultural heritage.
