11414 Mattheus Smallegange (1624-1710) – View of Huis Voor Houte and Kasteel Hellenburg – Engraving (1696)
"Huis Voor Houte" and "Kasteel Hellenburg." This print features two distinct topographical views arranged vertically. The upper section illustrates the manor of Huis Voor Houte in Kruiningen, shown with its formal gardens and surrounding orchards. The lower section depicts the ruins of Kasteel Hellenburg, surrounded by a moat and overgrown with trees. These engravings were published in the Nieuwe Cronyk van Zeeland, a comprehensive historical and genealogical record of the province of Zeeland, printed in Middelburg by Johannes Meertens. The work is celebrated for its highly detailed plates documenting the architecture and estates of the Dutch nobility during the late seventeenth century.
Mattheus Smallegange was a Dutch historian, genealogist, and translator primarily known for his monumental chronicles of Zeeland. He spent decades gathering historical documents and commissioning artists to create visual records of the region's towns, castles, and coats of arms. His primary contribution, the Nieuwe Cronyk van Zeeland, remains a foundational source for the history of the province. Although he faced financial difficulties throughout his career, Smallegange’s dedication to documenting the heritage of the Netherlands earned him a lasting reputation in Dutch historiography.
