11403 Friedrich Justin Bertuch (1747-1822) – Amphibious Animals – Hand-coloured engraving (1790)

This set of two plates depicts a diverse selection of fauna including a sloth, an armadillo, a kiwi, and various lizards and salamanders. These hand-coloured engravings were published in the Bilderbuch fur Kinder in Weimar by Friedrich Justin Bertuch. Friedrich Justin Bertuch was a distinguished German publisher, editor, and man of letters during the Weimar Classicism period. He founded the Landes-Industrie-Comptoir, a highly successful publishing house that produced a wide array of scientific and educational materials. His most significant achievement was the Bilderbuch fur Kinder, a monumental twelve-volume pictorial encyclopedia published between 1790 and 1830. Through this work, Bertuch aimed to revolutionize children's education by combining art with scientific observation.
