"Le Soui-manga à longue queue et à capuchon violet" and "Le Soui-manga à collier" presents a comparative study of two sunbird species, noted for their curved bills and vibrant plumage. The upper figure illustrates the Long-tailed Sunbird perched on a mossy branch, while the lower figure depicts the Collared Sunbird in a similar lateral pose. This hand-coloured lithograph was produced by the printer de Burggraaff in Brussels and published by Th. Lejeune. The work is based on the scientific descriptions authored by the Comte de Buffon for a mid-nineteenth century natural history series.

George-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon, was a preeminent French naturalist, mathematician, and cosmologist whose work profoundly influenced the field of natural history. His massive encyclopedia, Histoire Naturelle, aimed to document everything known about the natural world in a systematic and accessible manner. Although he was not the illustrator of this specific plate, his extensive descriptions of bird behavior and anatomy provided the scientific foundation for generations of ornithological artists. Buffon's theories on the development and distribution of species were central to the Enlightenment's understanding of biology and served as a precursor to later evolutionary thought.
