"Le Pape" and "Le Bouvreuil Bleu" presents a comparative study of two vibrant passerine birds. The lower figure illustrates the Painted Bunting, known for its multifaceted plumage of red, blue, and green, perched upon a small branch. The upper figure depicts the Blue Grosbeak in a similar pose, highlighting its deep blue coloration and heavy beak. This hand-coloured lithograph was produced by the printer de Burggraaff in Brussels and published by Th. Lejeune. The work is based on the descriptions provided by the Comte de Buffon for a mid-nineteenth century edition of his natural history series.

George-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon, was a preeminent French naturalist, mathematician, and cosmologist whose work profoundly influenced the field of natural history. His massive encyclopedia, Histoire Naturelle, aimed to document everything known about the natural world in a systematic and accessible manner. Although he was not the illustrator of this specific plate, his extensive descriptions of bird behavior and anatomy provided the scientific foundation for generations of ornithological artists. Buffon's theories on the development and distribution of species were central to the Enlightenment's understanding of biology and served as a precursor to later evolutionary thought.
