11390 Frederick Nodder (active 1770–1800) – Natural History Study of Muricated Madrepore – Hand-coloured engraving (18th Century)

"Muricated Madrepore" presents a detailed botanical and zoological study of a stony coral specimen, of the genus Acropora. The work illustrates a robust, branching structure with three prominent upward-reaching stalks, each terminating in a complex, radiating skeletal pattern. The surface of the coral is rendered with meticulous stippling and line work to capture its porous, rough-textured exterior, enhanced by subtle hand-colouring in earthy tones. This engraving was published in London by F.P. Nodder as part of The Naturalist's Miscellany, a celebrated periodical dedicated to the systematic documentation and illustration of diverse biological species.
Frederick Nodder was an esteemed English natural history artist and engraver who served as the Botanical Painter to Queen Charlotte. He is best known for his prolific contributions to The Naturalist's Miscellany, where he worked closely with the zoologist George Shaw to produce hundreds of detailed plates. His work is noted for its scientific accuracy and aesthetic elegance, capturing the minute details of plants, insects, and marine life. Nodder's illustrations played a significant role in the dissemination of natural science during the late eighteenth century, providing a visual record of the biological diversity being documented by European explorers and scientists.
