"The Palmated Sponge" presents a botanical and zoological study of a sponge specimen,  Haliclona oculata, characterized by its branching, hand-like structure. The work illustrates the organic form with a central stem transitioning into flattened, finger-like projections, each covered in numerous small pores or oscula rendered with precise stippling and line work. This engraving was published in London on February 1, 1795, by F.P. Nodder as part of The Naturalist's Miscellany, a celebrated periodical dedicated to describing and illustrating newly discovered or noteworthy species from around the world.

Frederick Nodder was an esteemed English natural history artist and engraver who served as the Botanical Painter to Queen Charlotte. He is best known for his prolific contributions to The Naturalist's Miscellany, where he worked closely with the zoologist George Shaw to produce hundreds of detailed plates. His work is noted for its scientific accuracy and aesthetic elegance, capturing the minute details of plants, insects, and marine life. Nodder's illustrations played a significant role in the dissemination of natural science during the late eighteenth century, providing a visual record of the biological diversity being documented by European explorers and scientists.
