11385 George Shaw (1751–1813) – Natural History Study of a Molurus Snake – Engraving (1802)

"Molurus Snake" illustrates the species Python molurus, commonly known as the Indian python, depicted in a complex, overlapping coiled pose. The engraving captures the snake from a slightly elevated perspective, showcasing the intricate, dark-splotched camouflage patterning across its robust body and the fine scale texture of its skin. This copper engraving was published in London on January 1, 1802, by G. Kearsley as part of General Zoology, or Systematic Natural History, an expansive multi-volume survey documenting the diversity of the animal kingdom.
George Shaw was an eminent English botanist and zoologist who served as the keeper of the Natural History Department at the British Museum. A co-founder of the Linnean Society, he dedicated his professional life to the formal description and classification of various species, particularly those arriving from recent global expeditions. His systematic approach and prolific publications provided a critical scientific foundation for nineteenth-century zoology. Shaw was instrumental in introducing countless species to European science through his rigorous and highly detailed descriptive works.
