11358 Robert Bénard (1734–1777) – Technical Study of Ophthalmic Surgical Instruments and Procedures – Engraving (18th Century)

"Chirurgie" illustrates various specialized instruments and techniques for eighteenth-century eye surgery. The upper section features several types of lancets and needles used for delicate ocular incisions, while the central portion provides detailed diagrams of surgical procedures, including the depression of a cataract and the treatment of a fistula lachrymalis. The work is rendered with the technical precision and fine hatching characteristic of high-quality Enlightenment-era documentation. This copper engraving was produced for the Recueil de Planches of the Encyclopedie, ou Dictionnaire raisonne des sciences, des arts et des metiers, the monumental project edited by Denis Diderot and Jean le Rond d'Alembert in Paris.
