This hand-coloured copper engraving was published in the Bilderbuch fur Kinder, a landmark multi-volume educational series printed in Weimar.
Friedrich Justin Bertuch was a prominent German publisher and man of letters who established the Weimar Industry and Literature Bureau. He is best known for creating high-quality illustrated pedagogical works that aimed to provide children with a comprehensive understanding of world geography, natural history, and diverse cultures. His encyclopedia was a revolutionary achievement in Enlightenment-era publishing and remained a standard reference for decades.
