11335 Friedrich Justin Bertuch (1747–1822) – Botanical Study of a Cedar of Lebanon – Engraving (Hand-coloured) (1790–1830)
"Pflanzen" illustrates the morphology of a Cedar of Lebanon, featuring a mature specimen with its characteristic tiered branching and horizontal crown. The composition includes detailed anatomical studies of a large, upright ovulate cone, a cross-section of a cone revealing the seed arrangement, and a small cluster of needle-like leaves with a developing male pollen cone. This hand-coloured copper engraving was published in the Bilderbuch fur Kinder, a landmark multi-volume educational series printed in Weimar.
Friedrich Justin Bertuch was a prominent German publisher and man of letters who established the Weimar Industry and Literature Bureau. He is best known for creating high-quality illustrated pedagogical works that aimed to provide children with a comprehensive understanding of world geography, natural history, and diverse cultures. His encyclopedia was a revolutionary achievement in Enlightenment-era publishing and remained a standard reference for decades.
