"To the Most Noble Mary Preston Duchess of Powis" This hand-coloured etching depicts various species of moths, caterpillars, and a chrysalis on a leafy branch. The work was published in London as part of a significant natural history series dedicated to documenting the life cycles of insects. The composition highlights the scientific interest of the early eighteenth century, blending artistic detail with entomological observation. The plate was produced and published by the artist himself in London.
Eleazar Albin was a professional naturalist and painter active in London during the first half of the eighteenth century. He is recognized for producing some of the earliest extensively illustrated English works on insects, birds, and spiders. To fund his ambitious scientific publications, Albin relied on subscriptions from the nobility and taught drawing and painting. His contributions helped establish a foundation for the study of natural history in Great Britain through meticulous visual records.
