This lithograph depicts a tranquil landscape scene in the vicinity of Touranne, present-day Da Nang, in Vietnam, titled Vue Prise aux Environs de Touranne (Cochinchine). The composition features a cluster of traditional dwellings with thatched roofs situated on a gentle slope, surrounded by lush tropical vegetation and dense forest. In the foreground, a group of figures in local attire is gathered under a large parasol, while others are seen near the houses, providing a sense of daily life and social interaction. The background reveals distant, mist-covered mountain peaks under a vast, cloud-filled sky. This illustration was featured in the official account of the voyage of the corvette La Bonite and served as a technical record of the topography and ethnography encountered during the French scientific expedition around the world.

Auguste-Nicolas Vaillant was a French naval officer and explorer who commanded the corvette La Bonite on a major circumnavigation from 1836 to 1837. The expedition was primarily scientific in nature, tasked with performing extensive linguistic, botanical, and zoological observations across South America, the Pacific Islands, and Southeast Asia. Vaillant oversaw the publication of the monumental Voyage autour du monde, which compiled these findings into multiple volumes accompanied by high-quality lithographic plates. His leadership facilitated the documentation of various cultures and landscapes during a period of increasing European maritime exploration, contributing significant data to the fields of geography and natural history in the nineteenth century.
