This copper engraving depicts the Christian hermit Saint Blaise seated in a cave or rock shelter in the wilderness, shown with his hands clasped in prayer. He is surrounded by various wild animals, including a bear, a hedgehog, and a fox, illustrating the legend of his protection over the beasts of the forest. The scene employs the dense linework and detailed naturalism characteristic of late 16th-century Northern Mannerism.

Maerten de Vos was a highly influential Flemish painter and draftsman of the late 16th century, working in the Mannerist style. Although primarily a painter, he is best known for the hundreds of designs he created for copperplate engravers, which popularized his religious and allegorical subjects across Europe. He was a central figure in the Antwerp school of painting.
