10023 Abbé Prévost (1697–1763) – Map of Spitsbergen (Arctic) – Copper engraving (1758)

This copper engraving is a detailed hydrographic and geographical map of the Arctic archipelago of Spitsbergen. The map was engraved in 1758 and explicitly states it was based on Dutch observations from 1664 for the Histoire générale des voyages. The map details the complex coastline, bays, capes, and navigational hazards of the region, documenting European knowledge of the Arctic territories.
Abbé Prévost (Antoine François Prévost d'Exiles) was a French novelist, historian, and cleric of the 18th century, best known for his novel Manon Lescaut. Crucially for this work, he was the primary editor and compiler of the multi-volume Histoire générale des voyages, a monumental compendium that synthesized and documented the accounts of European exploration and geographical knowledge from around the globe.
